Are you someone who painstakingly peels off the white threads of mandarins and the like? If so, you might want to rethink your habit.
Now that it’s getting uncomfortably cold outside and the flu epidemic is sweeping over us, you should make sure to strengthen your immune system. Oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and mandarins, among others, are considered vital substances for the immune system. Their high vitamin C content can intercept so-called free radicals in the body and thus ensure better cell protection.
Tastes differ, and the question of whether to peel or eat the whites can sometimes lead to lively discussions. On the one hand, there is the argument of the lazy and comfortable, who want to save themselves the tedious work of pulling the strings and therefore eat the fruit immediately after peeling. On the other hand, some will go to any lengths to remove the last of the white troublemakers.
From a health point of view, it is not harmful to eat the white threads. According to the consumer advice center in the German state of Bavaria, the white residue at the outer end of the fruit flesh is healthy. Nutrition expert Silke Noll from the Consumer Advice Center explains, “The white skin between the peel and the fruit contains just as much vitamin C as the flesh itself.
The white layer, also known as the mesocarp, also contains useful fiber and flavonoids, a group of natural substances that are said to have antioxidant properties.
What you should not eat with citrus fruits, however, is the outer peel itself. These are often contaminated with pesticides. “It is best to wash the fruit with warm water before peeling. After peeling, it is also advisable to wash your hands thoroughly.
